Radiant Barrier Installation in San Mateo, CA
Keep Heat Out of the Attic
We Improve HVAC Costs and Efficiency

As the sun beats down on your roof, heat will begin to radiate into the attic space. That heat doesn’t stay there, unfortunately, and it works its way down through insulation and eventually raises the temperature of your entire home. If your HVAC system seems to be running constantly just to keep up, it may be time to consider installing a radiant barrier.
At EM Energy & Air, we specialize in radiant barrier installations that help San Mateo homeowners reduce cooling costs and improve indoor comfort. We also offer complete HVAC and insulation services, so we know how all the components of your home’s energy system work together. If you’re looking for a way to lower your attic temperatures and ease the load on your air conditioning, we’re happy to perform a detailed inspection and provide a free estimate.

I highly recommend EM Energy & Air!! We had them remove and replace our attic insulation, clean and sanitize our attic and install new insulation and a heat shield in our home. The crew was awesome. They laid down plastic for the pathway, and around the entire area where work was to be performed. It took about 5 hours and they were non-stop working to completion. We got a few quotes and were well worth our cost. Can’t say enough good things about the entire process, from initial meeting, quote to work completed!!

As a Professional Engineer and HVAC business owner, I can certainly recommend E&M. I pursued multiple bids and Eilon was by far the most knowledgeable, thorough and professional. His field team was courteous, worked neatly, and finished the project on time. We already notice that the HVAC system runs less and the house holds temperature better. Strong endorsement from me.

we are very pleased having hired EM Energy & Air trough Eilon to tackle our attic project. From scheduling an appointment to getting the job done all went smoothly and faster than we expected. After reaching out on Sunday our attic got renovated within 1 week time frame: removing the old insulation, clean up of the attic, installing a whole house fan, redoing the HVAC pipes and insulation. I am very pleased with work done and professionalism of the crew. They worked very clean and swiftly ( all work was done in 1 day).

I called up these folks initially to get an estimate to clean out my attic. They provided me the best bid I received in terms of details and price. After a candid conversation with Eilon, I decided to have EM energy and air also install new insulation and seal off my attic. The crew were very thorough in sealing off all the possible rodent entry points and did a great job with the cleaning. And the insulation came just in time for the heat wave. It made a 10 degree difference in the inside temperature of my home. Great experience, would highly recommend them.

Installing two heat pump with EM was a breeze; communication was very timely and the job was done well and as agreed. Quote process: They got me a fair quote same-day by just from sending them info over text (while other companies took weeks) and the price was fair. Change orders: I decided later I want two units, and again it was a smooth process. Also later there was an equipment change – and it made it convenient for me. Job Day: 4 guys arrived as agreed and get it done same day. I talked to most of them and all were polite, nice and upbeat. They let me inspect the work closely, made sure I am happy and give me tips on next steps. TLDR; Would hire them again and I am happy to recommend to my neighbors!

The Role of Radiant Heat in Attic Temperature
Radiant heat is energy from the sun that travels through space and heats up solid objects like your roof. When that heat reaches the roof surface, it begins to move into the attic. Without anything to stop it, attic temperatures can rise to 130°F or more on a typical sunny day in San Mateo. Once that space heats up, insulation becomes less effective, and your HVAC system is left to do the heavy lifting.
Installing a radiant barrier creates a thermal shield inside your attic. Instead of absorbing the sun’s heat, the barrier reflects it back toward the roof and away from your living space. That keeps the attic cooler and reduces the heat that reaches the rest of your home.
Radiant Barriers vs Traditional Insulation
Insulation and radiant barriers work differently but complement each other well. Insulation slows down the movement of heat through walls and ceilings, but it doesn’t stop radiant heat from building up in the attic. A radiant barrier addresses the problem at the source by limiting how much heat enters the space in the first place.
While insulation is necessary for year-round energy efficiency, a radiant barrier is especially effective during San Mateo’s warmer months. This two-part strategy (insulation plus radiant reflection) helps create a more comfortable home while lowering energy use.
Our Radiant Barrier Installation Methods
Not every home requires the same type of radiant barrier, and we tailor each installation to fit the structure and layout of your attic.
Aluminum Foil Barriers
This is the most widely used option and one of the most effective. Aluminum foil is stapled to the underside of roof rafters or laid across attic floor joists. We use American-made materials from trusted manufacturers like RadiantGUARD® and EcoFoil®. These foil barriers reflect radiant energy before it enters your attic space, dramatically reducing the temperature.
Spray-On Radiant Coatings
For attics that are tight or have unusual framing, spray-on radiant coatings like HeatBloc Ultra® offer a flexible solution. We apply this coating directly to the underside of your roof sheathing. While not quite as reflective as foil, it still offers significant thermal control and can reach areas that rolled foil cannot.
Radiant Sheathing for New Roofs
If you’re replacing your roof or building a new home, radiant barrier roof sheathing may be a smart investment. These panels come pre-laminated with a reflective surface and are installed as part of the roof structure. They provide permanent radiant heat control without the need for post-construction attic work.
An Overlooked Benefit: Longer Roof Life
Most homeowners are interested in radiant barriers because of the immediate energy savings, but there’s another angle worth considering—your roof’s longevity. Excess attic heat accelerates the aging of roofing materials from underneath. Asphalt shingles and wood shakes become more brittle when exposed to extreme interior temperatures over time.
By keeping the attic cooler, a radiant barrier can reduce the wear on your roof and help extend its service life. It also supports better moisture control, which helps prevent mold and rot inside your attic and roof framing.
Radiant Barriers and Passive Cooling
San Mateo’s cool coastal evenings present a unique opportunity for passive cooling. With the right ventilation setup and a radiant barrier in place, you can take better advantage of natural airflow. When the attic is no longer superheated from the sun’s rays, whole house fans or attic fans become even more effective. This allows your home to release built-up heat overnight and begin each day at a more comfortable baseline temperature.
If you’re already using attic fans or considering a whole house fan system, adding a radiant barrier will make those systems even more efficient. We can evaluate how all these parts fit together and help you create a setup that works with the local climate instead of against it.
The Benefits of Radiant Barrier Installation in San Mateo
When you install a radiant barrier, the changes are often noticeable right away. You’ll likely experience more stable indoor temperatures, especially on the second floor or in rooms that face the afternoon sun. Air conditioning systems tend to cycle less frequently, which translates to lower electricity bills and fewer service calls over time.
Cooling systems last longer when they’re not pushed to the limit every summer. A radiant barrier also supports your insulation by keeping the attic space within a manageable temperature range. This leads to better indoor air quality, reduced risk of mold growth, and longer-lasting attic materials overall.
